This is what I've been working on the last few days.

Painting Miniatures
We bought Talisman a while ago (still haven't played it). It's a fantasy board game that comes with little figurines. They are nicely modelled, but not painted. I've been meaning to paint them for a while, so this week I got brushes, paints, primer, a knife, files, fixative, and a bunch of other random things I needed. I read up a bunch of stuff on painting miniatures, and found a few really good sites and youtube channels. (Just to note, Sebastian at Guild of Harmony is amazing. I want to be able to paint like him some day.)
I did some practise sessions on cheap army men, and it turned out okay. A bit flat, a bit boring.

But I figured why not just move on to the real thing? Well, because I lacked confidence. So I did a mock up in photoshop :)

The mockup actually made things 20million times easier. I had a colour reference to mix colours from (mixing colours from your head is really hard) and a guide on where to put those colours. It could be considered cheating, but I'm willing to try anything to make things easier on myself.
Anyway - here's the final thing. It took me three hours to paint yesterday, and that doesn't include all the time I spent trying (somewhat futilely) to get the lines where the model had come out of its mould off, and priming the plastic so that the paint would stick to it.
What do you think?

sp3
"It's nice to know that there will still be kittens in the singularity." such a cute quote.
i installed xp sp3 today - i don't really know why i waited so long. when sp2 came out i ordered it (on cd, because my 'net connection wasn't good enough to download it - shock) straight away. but sp3 has been out for ages and i just never bothered with it.
but for these few days i have to keep my 'net connection open and having it crash out every 20 minutes is just not on. so, in a bid to eradicate my connection woes, i updated to sp3. and so far it seems to be working out well.
i've listened to Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption) by Muse 21 times over the last week. i think there's subliminal messaging in the lyrics: let's start over again.
wacom are running a competition on dA with the theme: dreams. i'm very tempted to enter, because i have these amazing ideas in my head, but i just know that if i try to draw them they will fall apart. i can never draw what's in my head. something in my brain messes up the composition, or perhaps images in my head are in 5D or something and don't convert well to 2D.
in other news: i'm back playing fallout3, and listening to a lot of philip glass at the moment.
that is all.

happy summer solstice. today is roasting - it's as if we've offically hit summer, the air has been heated by the sun heading up to this point and now we get to bask in the heat. yea... except that it's a very muggy kind of heat. a thunderstorm would be fun right about now. don't think the clouds are ominous enough, though.
i don't really have a lot of news. went in around the world street performance on saturday - just for a bit. and made sushi on saturday night. that turned out well. hmmm, i might have sushi for lunch. yummy.
i'm playing drakes fortune at the moment - well i started it on friday and am almost finished. it's kinda fun, but there are too many gun fights for my liking. (i have drastically improved at aiming with a console controller since last summer, though.) but i was at a bit last night where it was really dark and all i could see was a little flashlight ring segment of the screen and there were baddies and i was so scared. i even screamed a little at one bit. hhaaaaaaa, games shouldn't be allowed to have dark segments. i get so frightened. i could never play a game like dead space or alone in the dark (if that's the one where you can only see the bad guys through your camera) that just seems like the most frightening thing ever.
yea... not much else to say.

some art
i coloured for the whole day yesterday. i had "draw something" on my list of things to do, but drawing inspiration just hasn't been happening... so i took a colour-me by one of my friends on deviantArt and worked on it in painter.
maybe it will get my artistic brain working.

guild wars part 2
genrechallenge has started a sister-comm: genrechallenge art (gc_art). this is going to be so great. i'm really excited about something that can get me drawing every month. i like drawing, even though i may not be very good at it, but i just don't spend enough time at it. i'd like to improve, but you can't improve if you never do anything. so hopefully my excitement will transmute into motivation and i'll be getting at least one drawing-thing done every month. yeay.
lordkilljoy and i played guild wars for a few hours last night. it was so much fun. (woah - i just rubbed my cheek and it's so soft - i exfoliated in the shower. i never exfoliate, maybe i should...) we roamed the country-side delivering things and killing monsters and getting killed occasionally, but it was good. lordkilljoy was the tactician of the evening - i just wandered around looking at pretty things and thinking up a name for my pet cat! heh - nah, i wasn't that bad. i have one good spell that does 19 damage - i used it lots and shot my bow at things and sikked my cat on things. yeay.
yesterday i created a long list of animals that exist on earth so that i would have a good base to work from for random animals in the world of my novel. random animals don't even come into the story, but if i want the world to feel richer, they should.
i didn't sleep well last night. i woke at 3 feeling very thirsty and didn't get back to sleep until after 5. note to self: do not eat a lunch-worthy meal of tuna and relish on toast at 11pm. it's not good for sleeping. and my brain just wouldn't be quiet. between images of guild wars and ideas about animals and other random things, like random songs and directions for my life, sleep just was not happening. i have a feeling i'll be tired this evening. oh well.

art post 3
ok, yet more art. this one is also an old piece that got left behind. it's still not 100% finished, but it's done enough for me to publish it.
i havn't much else in the way of news. happy birthday irirshmadcat. i'm a day early, but i'm sure you won't mind.
it's raining again today. yesterday brightened and me and penelope_stone got to go for a walk in the powdermills, in the sunshine. it was lovely.
yea... if i think of anything else to say i'll do another post. my brain is totally blank right now. perhaps because i woke at 8:45 this morning, after getting to sleep some time after 1am.
i had really a wierd dream, though. i think it was inspired by all the news from san diego comic con. i was some kind of gaming com, barry (d+d) was there and there was a huge group of just about everyone i know playing d+d. but it was getting late and i had to get the last bus home. and i had to figure out where it left from - it turned out to be just outside the convention centre. so i had 20 minutes and i decided to go on a ride, but it turned out to be a massive larp that started out in an old temple or something and went on a rollercoster and then ended up on a beach and we were all given plastic sticks. i saw my aunt joan on the beach. but i was paranoid about missing my bus and then i woke up.

more new art
:) i love submitting pixel art to deviantart. it's the one category where, if you've done your pixelling correctly, you are guaranteed views and comments (and sometimes favs).
yea, i finally got around to finishing my pixel of penelope_stone's bedroom. it's in my dA gallery. so two new pieces of art in two days, this isn't bad going at all.
now i need to motivate myself to put this art up on my website.

i'm back drawing again
god. i'd been over a year and a half since i drew anything. that's terrible. i got bored of all my other creative pursuits this evening, so i opened up painter and pulled out my graphics tablet (and no - it wasn't covered in dust, because i wipe the dust off it regularly). i did a quick sketch and coloured it just as quick, so the results of my evening are somewhat slipshod, but it's not the worst thing i've ever drawn. anyway - funny loli girl with a broken wrist can be found at my deviantart account.
yea. bye.
ooh - look. my mood is happy - woooo!!!

people shouldn't be allowed to ring me (this post get's off this topic)
i just got a call from my bank asking me if i wanted to make any changes to my account details or take out a loan or something, but during the call i managed to drop my graphics tablet on the ground and get the wire for my mouse all caught up. and apart from that i'm totally shaking with the stress of having to talk to an unexpected person.
i'm such an unsocialized (aka shy) person - i just don't do normal human interactions very well.
ah well.
heh - oh yea - yesterday playing shivering isles, there was one part where i was in a kinda freaky area with bones scattered around a garden. i hear a noise like someone whispering or singing insanely or something. it's coming from behind me and is totally freaking me out - it sounds like who's evers making the noise would turn out to be something uberly freaky.
anyway - i turn around, nothing there. oh wait, goes my brain. it's actually coming from behind me in reality. duh - it's my phone ringing.
i had changed the ringtone to a song (helena by my chemical romance) and was totally not used to it. so yea - it was kinda funny. i'm kinda glad i didn't have to face the scary monster. that was one thing that used always get to me playing daggerfall - they'd put in all these crazy sounds and people laughing and stuff and it would freak me out wondering what sort of freaky creature that i can't find is making this pertifing noise. heh - yea. i guess that's why i don't play resident evil or silent hill or stuff - i'd cower in a corner, and when i did venture out i'd save every 3 seconds or something. i get like that playing oblivion sometimes. that's why i love new areas to explore, and why i always play sneaky characters - it's so much fun hanging out in the dark near a wall watching a monster come closer, and closer, and you can't run or he'll spot you, so you just crouch there, praying. and then he moves off and so do you. down the corridor - quick-saving at every corner and sometimes at every step.
yea - it's fun.
right before i got the call i was working on remembering how to draw - i'm cheating and doing a paint over (where you put a photo on a lower layer and basically copy it), but it's helping get me back into the swing of art-stuffs.

30 November 2006
i finished the nanowrimo on sunday or whatever and since then i've written about 500 words. but this is ok. i realized some time ago that my world was not working out at all and i've been overhauling it: giving the angels a realistic background, making up a history for zachery - a proper one. but that has been sideline stuff. i'm painting a pic of zachery and azrynn at the moment (of the scene i'm at in the novel) and zachery is seeming really vampire-like. the new history of archangels has them start off as normal people on altara (the world of the angels) and they die and are reborn as archangels - hence the pale skin and not needing to eat or sleep. and before anyone asks - no, they don't need blood to survive - they need magic, and no - they don't take it from angels.
so, yea. i'll be getting back to writing on monday, probably. i want to get this pic finished. it will hopefully be good - it has an elabourate background, but the characters are looking a bit wierd + i don't know what's wrong with them. oh well. i also realized that i can't do fabric to save my life. its eluding me - i think it has for a while... no - wait, zel's jumper looked quite cool. i was really dissappointed with the finished piece of that. the background ruined it, i think. oh well. now - back to art!

a bland post
i set up a home network today. that was fun. i printed a page from my computer on daddy's printer. it was really mad - i was jumping around like a mad thing. oh, to be easily pleased is definitely the best thing in the world. i called the connection "theVoid" - daddy liked it!
yea - i'm thinking about getting a laser printer. i figure that it would save me lots of money in getting drafts printed and stuff. not sure - i'm kinda thinking i should save the money and use it for my new-zealand visa instead.
i really havn't anything much to say: "Fall" plot outline thing continues in a whole heap of depth, all archassembly and devils' council have names and attributes.
ooh - i finished a painting yesterday, one of zel that i've been working on for almost a year and a half - i'm really going to have to speed up with paintings. anyway, i've not put it up on my site yet - but it is on deviantArt, just go to zarkia.deviantart.com and scroll down a bit to the most recent pic.
ok then, bye.
