Yesterday, penelope_stone signed me up to facebook. She gave me a username and password and was like, 'okay, now you fill in the rest.' Yeah. I'm going to keep it to real-life friends and family, which is why I'm not posting my user name here.
But, just as when I joined twitter, I will still be posting here. In fact, this journal will be 9 in 5 days. Isn't that cool. It will be 10 years old next year. A whole decade of random posts on stuff that happens to me.
In other news: I get to cycle into Intel today. That'll be fun. I've always wanted to cycle into Intel.
I went into the kitchen today and was at the sink looking over at a blank space where Nymph used live. And when I went into the kitchen last night I was still worried about turning on the light and making noise that I'd wake him, even though he's down in Kerry now. I'll get used to it in a while. Sure, in a few weeks everything will be completely different.
Yeah. I don't think I have much else news.
I'm trying to read four books in a month (good luck to me). The first is Elantris, and I'm about a third of the way though. I may actually get it finished by the weekend, because Sanderson's writing is not complex at all. In fact, i'm finding it a little too simplistic, but that's okay. It definitely reads more like a YA (young adult) than an adult fantasy.
Right so. I'm going to go now.
My life as it unfolds week by week (or month by month depending on how interesting things are).

more net connection troubles
so, my internet has been on and off all day. i know it's not the drivers or any programs clashing because i sorted all that back in november (or whenever it was). that's leaves one thing in my mind and that's the flow of data over the air itself. the dongle thingy that gives my computer wireless access is down the back of my computer, 3 or 4 walls, me and the hunk of metal that is the computer away from the router. the connection was coming up as very good, rather than the usual excellent. so i got a little usb extender thingy and now the dongle is on top of my computer and the signal strenght is excellent :)
hopefully it won't crash out any more.
hopefully it won't crash out any more.

i can't think of a subject
this morning i turned on my computer and the second icon to greet me in the notification area was a functional internet connection. and my response was: sweetness insanity! i haven't used that phrase in a long time - i kinda wondered where it came from, what murky depths of my brain did it leap out from when it saw the chance to be at large in the world again.
but anyway, i was very happy to see it. i think it even featured in my dream last night. my dream was really wierd, though. in it, i was told that i had a second dad and he was a trucker who drove to china on a regular basis, which is why he was never around. and he was trying to parallel park an articulated truck (a really big one) with very little success. by dream also featured ambrosia creamed rice, the regular members of my family, a tiny kitchen, and probably loads else that i can't remember.
apart from that, i have nothing else to say, really. i smell like lush yummy shower cream.
it's a bit stormy today - i had to turn on the light getting up (at 8:30) and while i was in the shower, listening to the rain and wind on the window, i had a sudden desire to put up our little fiber-optic tree and blue lights. roll on december :)

internet woes will be a thing of the past
more internet troubles. today my connection slunk out of the computer, crept from the kitchen and quietly flung itself from the balcony. and i was very, very annoyed at it. so between uninstalls, reinstalls, searching for drivers, reboots, more searching, i finally found a driver that is working. and hopefully it will continue to work with no hiccups long into the future.
so that's what i did today, instead of writing. hmmm. i've been on chapter 6 for the last week and a half now. (yes - i am supposed to be half way into ch. 7, but if i don't get ch.6 straight, the rest of it will be crooked too.) i'm getting through it all right, just very slowly. i'm writing all new descriptions for the main human city (i call them humans, even though all the races are human, because these guys don't use magic). it's the same city that zan and kej live in, only 20 years earlier. so it's funny knowing the area, but describing it from zachery's point of view. it's really cool actually - as i write, i'm seeing the place in my head and it seems so familiar - like a city i've lived in myself. it's kinda mad. i guess it sort of helps that i modelled it a little bit on cork city. only slightly, though - the hills more than anything. certainly not the buildings.
i don't really have a lot of news - we watched star trek on blu-ray last night. it is such a good movie. i smiled through most of it - the characters are just so funny.
i reached level 20 in fallout3. it's wierd now to find places and kill things and not get any xp for it. i'm finishing off the side quests and then i'm going to go finish the main quest and hopefully by then the dlc will have arrived (goty edition ordered - thanks to lordkilljoy)
yea - i'm going to go now.

sp3
"It's nice to know that there will still be kittens in the singularity." such a cute quote.
i installed xp sp3 today - i don't really know why i waited so long. when sp2 came out i ordered it (on cd, because my 'net connection wasn't good enough to download it - shock) straight away. but sp3 has been out for ages and i just never bothered with it.
but for these few days i have to keep my 'net connection open and having it crash out every 20 minutes is just not on. so, in a bid to eradicate my connection woes, i updated to sp3. and so far it seems to be working out well.
i've listened to Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption) by Muse 21 times over the last week. i think there's subliminal messaging in the lyrics: let's start over again.
wacom are running a competition on dA with the theme: dreams. i'm very tempted to enter, because i have these amazing ideas in my head, but i just know that if i try to draw them they will fall apart. i can never draw what's in my head. something in my brain messes up the composition, or perhaps images in my head are in 5D or something and don't convert well to 2D.
in other news: i'm back playing fallout3, and listening to a lot of philip glass at the moment.
that is all.

silly connection
Ever since we got our new internet in july, my connection has been on and off (unable to find certificates, limited connectivity, crashing out, unable to connect to wireless card, all sorts of fun things) and every so often i go at it to see if i can make it work properly. invariably i just make things worse and end up having to do a system restore to get it working at all. so today - since i'm a week ahead in my 16 week plan, i decided to go at it again. now it seems that the router will only pick up my pc if another pc is already connected to it. it won't start up wireless broadcasting just for my pc, no matter how hard i plead with it.
so i have it working now (but the laptop is also connected) and i'm just hoping that when i turn on my computer on monday i'll see a fresh, bright-eyed and ready connection waiting for me. i'm not keeping my hopes up on that, though.
i'm back playing fable2 at the moment. did i mention that already? i started a new character and am really enjoying the game. i've gotten up to new stuff in the game and it's really exciting. in fact, i enjoyed my time in the spire so much that i'm going to take my old character (the evil one) there and see just how bad things get. my good char woosed out at having to kill a fellow guard.
i'm back to 4 layers today (and fingerless-gloves). i had on 3 yesterday. i think it's the humidity is getting to me. i put on my hello kitty jumper this morning and was delighted by the smell of nag champa from the health fair, which is the last time i wore this jumper. i can still smell it now, but not as much - every time i moved during the day i'd get this lovely whiff. i'm totally considering putting an unopened box at the bottom of the wardrobe. mmmmm :)
wardrobe and cupboard are the wierdest words ever. and what's wierder is that they are both places to keep stuff. odd.
right, so. i'll go now.

welcome back to the internet
ah golly - i hadn't checked my friends page in so long that i can't go back far enough to read them all. our new router arrived (wired only) yesterday, i got it all set up with our new wireless n router today (too 3 hours - why are these things so complicated?). but it's great - we have internet again and can watch diggnation and totally rad show. wooo.
i spent the last few days in kerry with penelope_stone. i am offically fit. i made it up the worst part of the hydro road (~300m 45degree slope) without stopping. i was kinda happy with that. we wandered around the 2 lakes, had fun bog jumping and getting blown over by the wind.
so i'm a bit distracted, i'll update later.

London
For most of my life that I can remember, I've wanted to go to London, because it's the closest famous city to me and you'd think it wouldn't take that much to go visit it. But there was never anyone who wanted to go with me and I wasn't going to go on my own.
So I finally got to go to London. lordkilljoy and I went over to see Gordon and Niamh for the weekend. We saw loads: Tate Modern, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace (which should be called the horse parade), Camden, the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral and random bits of the city walking to and from tube stations. I loved all of it. I'm definitely going back some day, maybe when I have more money. There were some amazing things in Camden, but I curtailed myself to two tops.
It has great hanging out with Niamh and Gordon. We had some great meals and went out on Saturday with friends of theirs: good fun even though I was wrecked.
And on the flight back I spotted the apartment - that was mad.
In other news:
Nymph ate half a cricket today. He hasn't really been eating well since Newt died, and it had been a while since he'd eaten a decent amount. So I was delighted when he gobbled down the bit of cricket that I had chopped up for him. See, my problem is that I have no idea how big or small his stomach is and how much he's meant to eat.
In a strange sort of contrast, Yoshi refused to eat anything today. That's a first in a long time. But I'm not worried about him. He ate a pinky (new born mouse) on Friday and I imagine that he just wasn't hungry.
Our internet is down at the moment... so I'm writing this on monday, but not really sure when I'll get to post it.

A silly sort of post
I've been listening to Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass a lot recently. I got it off davidnarby when I was down last weekend. I kinda like Glass anyway; liked what I've heard of him before - Passages with Ravi Shankar and a few random mixes. And now I've just noticed that Koyaanisqatsi is from 1982, and so am I. I have this funny thing that there's a connection between me and lots of things from that year. Because I like lots of things from that year.
lordkilljoy's gone off to Raw for the evening and I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do with myself. Generally I spend my days doing stuff and looking forward to when he comes home, but now he's been and gone and I don't quite know what to do in this situation. I guess it doesn't help that I'm feeling just the slightest bit apathetic at the moment. I have 10 pages of script that I need to get written, but I woosed out after 3 pages today. And the exciting climactic end to act 1 just finished and the start of act 2 is less than dramatic. Sometimes I wonder how I'm not completely emo. My writing is so angst-filled and immature.
I'm rolling my eyes at myself.
I also don't know what to get for dinner. I'm feeling lazy and uninspired. And we have nothing that you can just pour boiling water over or quickly heat up in a pan. And it's way too miserable to even think of going to the shop for something. Actually - I think it's stopped raining, but still.
I have a cat at the top of my Firefox. Hee, that sentence seems wierd when you take it out of internet context. Anyway - it's all thanks to Personas for Firefox from Mozilla labs.
I think I'll do a stir-fry for dinner.
Right, since I've decided at least that much, I'll go now.
p.s. I've been waiting for a good occasion to use this usericon for ages. I'm not confused, but I'm at a loss, so it's adequate.
ooh - gosh - how could I forget. I'm going to see The Princess Bride in the cinema on the 11th of May. It's going to be the coolest thing ever. I've been 100% in love with this film my whole life. I know the whole thing off my heart I've seen it so many times. It's going to be fantastic.
p.p.s i don't think i've ever used this mood before.

mouse gestures
yeay!
mouse gestures are back working again in gmail. i really missed them. even though they were gone for about 2 weeks, by brain just couldn't get out of the habit of right clicking and flicking the mouse left. now i am happy. navigating my email is easy again :) i'm so delighted i may even make a cross-post to twitter.
i made a 16 point to-do list this morning while lying in bed (it was cold out of bed and i didn't want to go out into it). if i do everything on the list today i will be 100% exhausted by the end of the day. but it's a nice mix of practicality, exercise and creativity.
i'm debating heading down to cork on thursday... it would be fun to catch a bit of the health fair, but it's a long way to go just for a day and a half. so, yea. i guess i'm just feeling lazy. i should go. i want to go, i just don't want to face five and a half hours of travelling.
ok - my 2 song playlist ended, that means i have to start on item number 1 of my list: go to aldi.
right.
don't feed the yao guai. that is all.
p.s. - i have no idea what tags to put on this post.

the weekend (my brain is tired)
ugh, google reader seems more like a chore than a hobby at times. i think i need to un-add egl again (116 new entries in that comm in 4 days. not funny). i have 205 new entries. i'm so glad i got to check my Lj on (whatever day it was - 24th oh wait that was sunday - not so bad then). i had a page of entries since then. not too bad at all, actually. twitter was another matter. i stopped reading after 3 pages of random replies.
ok. enough of complaining about getting home after a weekend. the weekend was really good. very domestic - relaxing at home, not really doing anything major, cooking together in the kitchen, but it was good. i got to play psychonauts. it's a very strange game, but fun. i didn't get very far with it (about half way through the second mind-area).
i went looking for boots in dublin and i found a pair with a nice shape (chunky: boots must be chunky) but they were black (boring) and they didn't come in my size (which was 3.5 for this particular company). so that was a little disappointing.
i've been awake since 6:30 this morning and up since 7:11. way too early, but i did it to myself. i wanted to see what lordkilljoy would be like getting up on a work morning. he made it sound like the biggest struggle ever, but i think most of that is just messing. once he made the decision to get up things seemed to go very well. unfortunately it takes 4 alarms to get him up, where it takes me half an alarm, so i was eight times awake and there was no way i was getting back to sleep. but that's ok. it's not like i had to do anything productive. now, if i'd had work, things would probably have been disastrous. i was totally falling asleep on the bus on the way down. i never fall asleep in transit (unless i've been awake for over 20 hours). so it will be bed early for me tonight.
tomorrow i think i'll go into town and look for boots in cork. hopefully i'll find something nice. meh - i'll see. i'm guessing the whole half-size feet thing is going to depress me, so i'll just psyche myself up for depression and rack my brain to figure out where boys' boots hang out.
i'm sure i'm forgetting something. oh well. there are infinite more entries, and i can make one if i feel the need to divest my brain of more stories and random bits of info.
ooh - i got to see a bit of flight of the conchords. it is very random, but funny. we also finished watching avatar. great series. i think i liked the fact that it ended, and didn't just turn into a sprawling 7 season epic where everything falls apart around season 4 and just drags after that. i like that they had a story to tell and they told it well.

ooh. i totally forgot to say. lordkilljoy signed me up to twitter over the weekend.
it's ok, but i have one (ok, maybe two) problem(s) with it. i think the @ sign is the least aesthetic thing i have ever seen on a messenger / blog type thing. so i may boycott it, except that it happens automatically when you reply to another persons micro-blog.
i don't really like the name; it makes me feel like the butt of some kind of sadistic joke. ha hah - you use twitter. you are a twit for being pulled into that one. and that makes us all twits for following the crowd and posting like lemmings about all the things that we think each day.
for all that, it is a kind of neat idea - mini posts that let people know the little intimates of your life without having to read through a massive rant.
it helps with being precise - you have to cut out all the ramble, which is definitely something i need practice with. i like to ramble - a lot (if you hadn't noticed). even the way i phrase my sentences: they hold a lot of excess words. so that's good.
but i do miss a structured reply system - like the comments on livejournal. people reply to a particular post and you can just see them all and don't need to remember what went before, because you can just scan up and see. but i guess this is something to improve my focus and memory.
hhmmm, the goods are more like placations than definite positive arguments. oh well.
oh yea. for anyone who's interested: i'm zarkia over there too.

oh yea. for anyone who's interested: i'm zarkia over there too.

and now an actual update
buh, i always seem to start my entries with a dull statement like, "the weekend was good". it makes me feel uninspired. but i also feel that just starting into a story in the middle of it (as in, not doing a lead-up to the meaty bits) is too sudden. anyway.
i've been playing portal on lordkilljoy's xbox. got about half way through over a month ago, and i finally got around to finishing it yesterday. ok, i feel i should mention that lordkilljoy had totally hyped up the ending, so i was expecting something absolutely amazing. it was a good ending, but not nearly as good as other games i've played (prince of persia comes to mind for best game ending ever: both sands of time and two thrones). i should also mention that portal is the most annoying game i've played in ages. actually, i don't think my frustration was helped by the fact that it takes me ages to aim accurately with an xbox (i had typed xbob, hee) controller (or any controller that isn't a mouse and keyboard, for that matter), so i kept getting stuck around railings and things. all that aside, i couldn't stop thinking about the game all the way down on the bus and as i fell asleep last night, so obviously i enjoyed it... i just didn't realize it as i was playing or something. actually - it was hilarious. i was somewhat tired on monday night (i got mostly finished monday night, and just did the last bit tuesday afternoon) and i kept forgetting that i had a portal gun and what sort of fun things it can do to make my life easy. so i ended up wandering around a lot (i think my brain was secretly looking for levers or something) and wondering how on earth to get onto the next bit. of course, when i remembered the wonderful uses of the portal gun, i berated myself for being such an idiot. lordkilljoy must think i'm slow in the brain or something!!
so yea. monday was interview day. it went well enough, apart from the fact that they asked me to "go through my cv" and gave me no hinting or encouragement or anything. right! i'll just ramble and mumble for a bit and feel like some sort of foolish robot for not being able to read your mind and know what it is you want me to say. grrr. it felt more like some kind of memory test than an interview. like as if they wanted to test my public speaking skills more than my ability to do the job they had advertised. i hate the world some times. i was feeling very misogynistic in the bus on the way back to cork yesterday. i need to stop ranting now - i can feel my stomach start to knot up with annoyance. ok, this is me breathing.
went to galway on sunday - played with lordkilljoy's nephews. or one of them at any rate. ryan is a little young to actually play with. but i got to play run around the cars with darragh (yes, the cars were parked). kids are great for doing random running with :)
hmmm. i can't help but feel that there was something else i wanted to say. lordkilljoy wants me to join twitter, but i don't think i will, because i like to go on so much. i just can't curtail myself to less than three paragraphs once i've managed to frame my thoughts, and i never do anything whimsical enough to warrant a one liner post and so on and so forth ...insert random excuses here...
yea. i think i should stop now - i seem to be getting somewhat ranty. some day soon i will write an incredibly happy post that will have nothing but goodness in it and will smell lovely like a warm summer's day and will taste like whipped ice-cream and will feel like... hmmm, ok :P i think i'm loosing my mind.
ooh - i think i'm actually really allergic to chocolate. i have this annoying cough that (possibly until now used to) comes randomly and i think it happens whenever i eat chocolate. i'll have to put it to the test. it would be so great if it was true, because i don't like chocolate and it would give me extreme motivation not to eat it :)
i figured this out yesterday when i got a magnum (the ice cream in magnums is the best ever, unfortunately there is tonnes of chocolate to get through first) and my cough came along afterwards to annoy me for a few hours. so it would be cool if i knew how to prevent my cough and it would never bother me again :) wooo!
and see - my mood is happy. i got over my mild annoyance at the world. actually, maybe my mood should be hungry. my stomach is empty right now.

firefox3
i have firefox 3. woo! the people at mozilla are great. by them making a big fuss about everything, i got rather excited about the release and it made my life so much more interesting for a few moments on a dull tuesday afternoon.
and it has one amazing feature: a big back button. i love it, no more hitting forward by accident for me! woo! apart from that it seems pretty similar to 2, google reader looks a little different, but that's all i've noticed. actually, i should go and see if deviantArt still works. it was being finicky with 2, so maybe by some miracle of the internet, it will work properly with 3.

god, i wish i could hate the internet
what an evil sink-hole of mindless time-wasting is the internet. if i had some lyrical ability i would be inspired to write an ode to it's brain-sucking tendencies. but i don't so i will just have to suffice with an explanation. i came on to update my livejournal and i ended up looking at friend's pages and their friend's pages and reading totally random things and then i remembered that i had just come on to update my journal, not faff about for half an hour (wow, faff is an actual word - it didn't come up underlinedy in red. cool) doing randomness. anyway.
i did have something rational to say.
but for the life of me i can't remember it.
it had something to do with writing, because i've been typing up the end of my novel all morning. it probably had something to do with my love affair with zachery. he is the coolest person living in my head at the moment, some of the things he does are just so incredibly cool. and i came up with these things. but i probably am totally biased, much the way a mother will unconditionally love her son, no matter what sort of stupid things he does. "oh, you held up a bank and are wanted in 35 states. you excellent boy, i'm so proud of you, why couldn't your father have been more like you." not that zachery is a bank robber, but you know.
yea, i'm quite certain that's not what i wanted to say, but it will do.
p.s. the lies of locke lamora is one of the coolest books i've read in a long time.
