Roller derby on saturday night was brilliant. we spent the first quarter of the first game figuring out how it all worked, and spent the rest of that match and all of the next admiring the teams' skills.
so how it works is there is a track - like a small running track, which the two teams skate around - all in a bunch. there is one girl in each team (the jammer) who starts behind the pack and skates faster to catch up. when she does, she squeezes through the pack - while they try to block her - and skates really fast to catch up to the pack again. then she squeezes through again, only this time for each blocker of the opposing team she passes, she scores a point.
that's basically it, nothing too hard to follow. there are a few other bits and we spent ages figuring out what the refs hand movements meant, but the real excitement is watching the jammer glide through the pack - or not, depending on her skill. all the girls have mad names and numbers, my favourite number was 3.14. another number was 36DD, another 2012 - that girl's name was like apocalypse or something.
they all wore team colours, but they wore fishnets or fancy knickers or mad socks in those colours. it was really fun.
we went to thor yesterday. it was brilliant. i really enjoyed it. the design / artistry of asgard (?sp) was amazingly beautiful, and the story was quite fun too.
i went out for a walk this morning. it was roasting, but nice. there was a lovely grove of old trees on my way, but when i went to tramp around in the shade there were wasps, so i left them to it.
i got a sunhat yesterday (a white one) so i could actually be outside and not have my head boiling to death. my hair is kind of lightening, though. there are strands going coppery :)
i don't think i have much other news.

atlanta
I have the wrestlemania theme tune stuck in my head. not really surprising, considering we spent the weekend in atlanta. ah, it was wonderful. not so much for the wrestling, which was fun but i'm not the biggest fan ever. no, it was brilliant because there were fountains and green grass and trees everywhere. the air wasn't at 15% humidity and sitting outside was simply perfect.
apart from wrestlemania, we wandered around the city, went to coke world, ate bison burgers (yummy), hung out, and got to talk to wrestlers in a pub one night. i wanted to go to the zoo, but no train went out that way, and navigating buses is a bit of hassle compared to navigating trains.
it was funny to come back to the yellow ground of albuquerque, but i suppose i'll get used to it again.
in other news, i'm doing script frenzy this year. the objective is to write a 100 page script in the month of april. i have no outline, and just half an idea of a plot, so we'll see how i get on with that.
it's been so long since i last updated, but i can't think of anything else new. i finally got a lovely summer dress, which was white, but i died blue. i've been walking and cycling.
i don't really know what else to say.

Winter
Happy 2011, everyone.
It's -8 outside. It got down to -12 last night. We stayed at home, where it was warm, and we had the heating on full blast. The balcony door has ice on the inside, it's a bit disturbing. We did go outside and light sparklers at midnight, and we saw fireworks from our balcony.
We're half-thinking of going snowboarding today (a bit late) or tomorrow. We went walking in Cibola Forest Foothills yesterday. It was amazing. The trails were covered in an inch or two of snow, the sun was out, it was freezing, but we were well prepared. We walked for about an hour (not that much - I think lordkilljoy was cold). I want to go again today, but I doubt that will happen. The road up was iced over in places. I imagine it would be even worse today. It's beautifully sunny, though. I feel I should make the most of it, because it's going to get cloudy again next week.
I don't have much else to say. Bye, so.

today we went exploring north abq
it was 18 degrees today. i was out in a t-shirt all day and i was warm. the car was boiling. we bought a sat nav and went on a trip across town. we went to rei and i got a camel back hydration thingy. it's 1.5l, and is a nice little bag at the same time. penelope_stone will be happy to know that we signed up for rei membership so she can buy as much as she wants when she comes over. members get discounts on bike services and stuff, so it seemed like a good idea.
we also went to tj (tk) maxx and got a bedside radio / ipod charging / dock thing and some nice foaming hand soap (tk maxx is the only place you can get random things like that). we also stopped in a 7 eleven for water. lordkilljoy's comment was, smells like 7 11. he worked in one for a few months ages ago.
the mountains around here are amazing. they look so rugged. there's kinda rock bits sticking out of the edges. i wonder how anyone goes hiking around them, they look really steep. maybe the trails are somewhere else.
did i mention dinner last night? it was lovely. the potatoes wen't done well enough though, so today i fried them for 20 minutes and they were so yummy. i fried them in the oil i'd used to brown the meat last night and it was delicious. it's so weird the way left overs are better than the real thing.
anyway, this was just a quick update. we're heading out for dinner now. i'm all for making something here, but lordkilljoy wants to try a steak place. oh well. i'm sure it will be nice anyway.

welcome back to the internet
ah golly - i hadn't checked my friends page in so long that i can't go back far enough to read them all. our new router arrived (wired only) yesterday, i got it all set up with our new wireless n router today (too 3 hours - why are these things so complicated?). but it's great - we have internet again and can watch diggnation and totally rad show. wooo.
i spent the last few days in kerry with penelope_stone. i am offically fit. i made it up the worst part of the hydro road (~300m 45degree slope) without stopping. i was kinda happy with that. we wandered around the 2 lakes, had fun bog jumping and getting blown over by the wind.
so i'm a bit distracted, i'll update later.

my weekend in a backwards chronology
ok - i wrote this entry and then decided the last paragraph was most interesting and put it first and then flipped all the paragraphs around. so now the last paragraph makes no sense, but this post gets so dull by then that i don't expect anyone will get that far.
i started reading ender's game yesterday. i've been kinda wanting to read it for a while. i'd heard good things about it. i'm enjoying it. i have no idea how it's going to end. i have no idea where it's going to go from scene to scene, which makes it the best thing i've read / watched / played in ages. because it's rare to find something that isn't predictable. actually, now that i think of it: watchmen wasn't really predictable. but anyway - with ender's game, i don't trust the narrator at all. which always makes for a fun read. yea - i stayed up until 3 reading last night. i just couldn't make myself stop reading and go to sleep.
on monday we got shelves and put them up. i say we, but it was lordkilljoy did most of the work. i let him, simply because he was faster than me. (indeed!) but his sitting room looks good now. his new tv unit thing looks really good, especially with all the stuff in it. it's like a shrine to technological entertainment. then i stayed up until just before 3 playing assassin's creed. i didn't mean to. the time just sort of passed me by, like a stealthy ninja.
sunday was a special day, because i got to play assassin's creed. :)
assassin's creed, for all the snarky reviews it got, is quite a fun game to play. and it's so pretty. and there is so much to do. ok, a lot of it may be repetitive collection things or objective things but free-running across the rooftops of cities is so much fun.
saturday, deluge day, we spent in an attempt to look around the shops of dublin, but the irish monsoon got in the way of those plans. we got the entire rainfall of august in 6 hours. drains were overflowing, roads were buckling and the rain was so heavy you got wet through in seconds. it was fun to watch, though.
but it didn't disrupt plans for sushi in goblin_insane's. the food was good, the games (transEurope and german trading game) fun and we got to watch some olympics.
my weekend in some short words would read: a rainy party with making shelves and having fun playing games.
hmm, that may not make much scene to anyone who wasn't there. i had an excellent weekend. it started on friday when i spent the entire length of the olympics opening ceremony on a bus to dublin. but that was ok - i had music and "order of the stick" for company.

of cobwebs and cuckoo spit; brambles and byways
me and penelope_stone are just back from a cycle down the powdermills. it was amazing; it always is.
while the evening was hot, the sun was shining and making fun splatters of light among the dark underthings of the forest. we raced along: under branches, over roots and around puddles. this evening we took a new trail, one i'd never cycled before and had only walked once, years ago. it turned out to be unsuitably narrow and clogged with brambles, trees, nettles and other fun vegetation. i'm just glad we don't have poison ivy in ireland.
i applied for more jobs today. hopefully someone will get back to me, and if not there is always reception work. :roll eyes: who wants to be a receptionist? not me.
right at the moment i'm slightly obsessed with the ting tings' great dj. i've listened to it 16 times in two and a half days.
not much else to say. i havn't really done much since i got back from dublin. played shiverling isles last night for a bit. azrynn is totally the coolest character. she can take a knight of order down with one critical shot from her bow (called "hellfreeze"). she roams the land with hellfreeze and goldbrand, taking down her enemies like a wind of death that no one sees coming and no one can stop and anyone who has reason to lies awake at night quaking in fear.

a morning in the countryside
i just had a wonderful cycle with penelope_stone. The sun shone for us, the countryside smelled of summer grass and summer wind. We headed for farran, through the village and out on the footpath beside the bypass. the footpath was concrete with regular divisions, the kind that are really fun to cycle over because you get a funny kind of massage. as i raced down the hill, i smiled for the joy of the wind in my face and the feeling of the footpath and i whispered to myself "i'm a train" and my smile broke into a grin of wonder. it was brilliant.
after that came the awful slog up farran hill, but it was worth it for the speed down the other side. if i hadn't been cycling, i would have closed my eyes. feeling the speed and the wind flying through you and the sun caressing you; it felt like flying.
we took a break in farran and did the obstacle course. i even managed to get most of the way across the high-bars, usually i can barely hold on to the first bar. then we headed home and i was almost dead by the time we got back. i couldn't even make it up the stairs - i had to have the bannister help me. and getting back down the stairs was just as painful. so i think i'll be really sore tomorrow, but i had fun today so it will be worth it.
dave's game last night was fun. we found out that we went totally wrong last week and that we made the adventure twice as long as it was supposed to be. ah well, we had fun interviewing / raiding the rooms of every character linked to the story.
at the taleweaver's meeting the guys made me realize that i need to make some changes to my child fiction. like the character dosn't act her age and the writing style doesn't suit the character, so i think what i'll do is tweak my character a bit and change the writing style to omnipotent narrator. i've never really done that and i've been wanting to try it for a while, so i'm not really sure how it will turn out. but it's and it's about doing things you've never done before.
i also think i'll change the way i do my location when i'm updating. i think i'll put the place the post is about, rather than my current location.
