Deftones

We went to see Deftones last night in Tempe. They were amazing. The difference between seeing one of your favourite bands and seeing a band you like is incredible. I knew every single song, so I didn't really care what they played. I rocked out to the whole gig. Whereas with bands I only sort of like, I'm constantly wondering what they'll play next, and if it will be a song I know or like, rather than just enjoying the music.
They played a surprising amount of songs from Adrenaline and White Pony, which was good, but a little unexpected. But it was cool. Bored and 7 Words work really well live. And my appreciation for the new album quadrupled, or something. The most I listen to it, the more I like it.
So yea. I'll totally go see them again if I get another chance.

Today is a good day

I love when I make a list of things to do and I get everything done. I had a wonderfully productive day today - got some writing done, some wedding stuff, hung out with River, tidied, got dinner ready. I'm all go. I wish every day could be like this.

We're off to Raw (wrestling) tonight. Hence the productivity. It should be really good - I'm looking forward to it anyway, and I've only been half-watching wrestling for the last few weeks.

I have a new morning routine. It's mostly the same as the old one, but after I get in from walking River and have breakfast, before I do anything else, I write for an hour. Just one hour - not that long at all, and I'm getting loads done. Okay - I am still rewriting (so it's possible to get loads done in an hour) but it still feels good getting though a whole chapter in that little time. I'm back picking at the start of Artificer again and I really think I have it this time. This is absolute final draft for the start of the book. After this I have to make Azrynn more of a person, and that's it. Those are my last two problems with the book. Then it's off to query. Oh, em. No. Wait. It's not. Then it's on to book 2 until I get a work permit - then query book one.

I don't have much else to say.

Wind

I couldn't go outside today because of the wind. It was gusting gale force 8, and a pretty constant force 6.
... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM MDT this evening...

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM MDT this evening.

* Location... the Santa Fe and Albuquerque Metro areas as well as
new mexicos northeast plains and the Chaves County plains
including Roswell.

* Winds... west winds will shift out of the northwest today with
sustained speeds from 25 to 35 mph and gusts from 45 to 50 mph.

* Timing... wind speeds will continue to strengthen through mid day
then remain strong through the afternoon. Speeds will weaken
below hazardous thresholds around sunset.

* Visibility... blowing dust will drop visibility well below 1 mile
at times in dust prone locations.

* Local impacts... strong Crosswinds will develop on north to south
and northeast to southwest oriented roads... including I-25.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take action to secure trash cans... lawn furniture... and other
loose or light weight outdoor objects.

It's kind of rotten, not being able to go outside because of the wind... well, more because of the dust and sand the wind carries.

We went to see Cage the Elephant on Tuesday night. They were good - very lively, and they played the three of their songs I know. Yeay.

My scriptfrenzy is going well enough. I'm still behind (by slightly less than one day), but catching up. If I can manage to get the pages done this weekend, I should be good. Here's hoping my idea lasts another 50 pages. I have a battle to go, then a whole new area, then the climax and the end. And leading up to this was the start, travel, this area and a battle. Hmmm. I may have to get creative with adding in CUT TO: to try to pad it out a bit. Cheating, I know, but my script is a bit action heavy as it is. It needs a bit of breathing space.

I don't have much other news. I want to make muffins, but I have no eggs, and can't go to the shop because of the wind. Ah well.

Loads of news

I need a new CMOS RAM battery for my computer. I knew this day would come, I expected it to come years ago. Problem is, I'm leaving in a month (not bringing my PC with me) and I won't be using my computer for 2+ years. I'm not really sure if it's worth getting a new battery.

mulkabu was up for the weekend. We had fun, went to see Fozzy (wrestler, Chris Jerico's band) on friday night. I haven't had as much fun in a long time. Chris Jerico really knows how to get a crowd going. Everyone loved him. Our group even managed to get a shoutout from him. :)

I'm tired now, though. It doesn't seem to matter what time I go to bed, my body wants to be up and about at 9am. So I've been getting about 6 hours sleep for the last few days. The kitchen was a bit of a mess too, and I managed to tidy it, but I only got half the dishes washed. This seems to be a new strategy for me. Washing half the dishes isn't nearly as daunting as washing all of them. So I washed the plates and knives and forks and left the pots, pans and bowls for later. Or tomorrow.

The building energy rating guy comes tomorrow. I wonder should I turn on the heating for him? Would it make the place seem better insulated if it was warm? I don't bother with the heating when I'm here on my own, because my little room gets nice and warm anyway.

I ate one of our peppers today. It was nice, as peppers go. They are not my favourite ever fruit. I have four cherry tomatoes beside me, which I just picked. I want to eat them right now, but I don't feel like them. (Yes, it is an odd sort of way to be.) I made hummus on friday. There was too much lemon juice in it. I've eaten about a third, but I'm not sure if I'll eat any more; it's really sour.
Wow, I just looked up what the difference between sour and bitter was (because I wasn't sure which my hummus was) and sour is acid while bitter is base. Isn't that interesting?
I also made chocolate cake again. It is totally yummy.

I'm addicted to a new (old) RPG. It's old, but I've never played it before, so it's new to me. Arcanum (of Steamworks and Magick Obscura). I'm enjoying it. I like the setting and the character system. The main plot is a little slow and there aren't enough side quests (or they are really hard to find), but apart from that, it's fun. I'm playing just to level and make my character better. I want to be master of firearms, lockpick and prowling. I also want to have a bit of magic and be able to make some stuff. I also want a new gun, but they are expensive. So, maybe by the time I get to 40th level, I will have all these things. I'm at 13th now. And my team and I managed to take down a 30th level jellyfish looking thing. We lured it away from its friends and ambushed it in the forest. It was expertly executed (the plan, not the jelly. I think it (the jelly) died from lead poisoning after I shot it with about 20 bullets).

Right. I'm going to go now.

life today

i suppose i should update.

i'm this close (index finger and thumb about a centimetre apart) to the end of draft 2. i finished the whole thing about a week ago and have been reading over it, sorting out bits that i'd skipped over the first run through. so that's kind of cool. i can't wait to get some feedback on this.
it's kinda funny, because when i started on the final bit of editing, i had to sort out the chapters (i'd had 13,000 word chapters - way too long) and now i'm thinking the number of chapters is going to double. i'm half way through and heading to ch. 15 and the original story ended on ch. 16. so yea. i guess 30 isn't a bad number of chapters. (this paragraph comes to you thanks to the word "chapters.")

apart from that, i really don't have a lot of news.

oh wait. i do.
we went to see star wars in concert on sunday. it was cool. my descriptive brain has failed me and all i want to say is: the guy on the tympanum looks like he's having a brilliant time. i want to play the tympanum. actually - i just watched the percussion section for most of it, because you can actually see what they are doing.
and it kinda made me want to watch the first three movies again. they are so pretty. i could fast forward all the bits with anikin in them and just skip on to the next pretty scene. anyway.

yea. i'll go now.

video games live

over the last few weeks, whenever i looked at the calendar on the fridge i felt a tingle of excitement. video games live was coming up and i couldn't wait for it. so last night was the big night. we were off to the national concert hall, lordkilljoy in dr. who stylings of a suit and cons and me wearing my lolita dress.
the concert was brilliant, between the orchestra, the choir, the visuals from the games and the light show that went along with it. the music was great (even though i didn't really know any of it), the showmanship was entertaining (and totally over the top) and the venue was perfect.
we hung around after to get signatures and gush at jack wall.

saturday night was lainey316's birthday. we went to a lebanese restaurant and then on to a pub. the food was good - it's always nice to try something different. it was a good night, but i was a little too tired and full to really enjoy it. the others went mad dancing - i danced in my chair :)

in other news:
today, for the first time ever, i used rubber gloves to wash the dishes. and the reason? i didn't want to take my gloves off. it's been really cold all weekend - the kitchen got down to 9degrees yesterday afternoon.
i'm a bit worried about nymph. he's kind of stopped eating and i wonder is he a little too cold. but he doesn't look very skinny, so i think he's all right.

27 November 2009

short news

i have been 100% freezing all day. when i came into the kitchen this morning it was 14degrees. it's 16.8 now, but the heating is just about to come on, and when it does i'll be hugging the rad.

we went to see ash on wednesday night. it was good to to be at a small rock gig again. concerts are all well and good (and amazing) but its hard to beat a good gig. ash totally rocked out, even adding in some totally cheezy "echo" singing. but i really enjoyed it - singing along to about 85% of the songs.

i'm over the worst of my novel. it's clear sailing from here, as far as i can tell. it's just editing, not rewriting. i'm half way through - heading on to chapter 8 on monday. i think ch. 9 is one of my favourite bits in the whole book. (it's very emo.)

i don't really have a lot of other news, or not that i can think of any.

13 November 2009

dreams of pets

i had an exceptionally wierd dream last night. all my dreams are wierd, but this one was especially strange.

me and lordkilljoy or possibly penelope_stone were at a market kind of thing and this guy was selling lizards that looked like dinosaurs (a brachiosaurus but with diamond-shaped plates along its back) it was cute, yellow and we bought it straight away. but there was something you had to do to it before you put it in a tank. you had to bite its neck. so i did, but i bit too hard and ripped off a bit of skin, leaving a huge hole near its collarbone (do dinosaurs have collarbones?). so we got it home and put it in the tank with yoshi, who was not at all impressed with this newcomer. he attacked the dino-lizard, aiming for the hole in its neck, and somehow managed to pull its heart out. dino-lizard, looking shocked, keeled over and died right then and there.
me and lordkilljoy were equally stunned, unable to believe that our scardy little yoshi had just killed something three times bigger than him.
so, later, i had to clean the corpse out of the tank and nymph was lying on it, happy as anything. i had a job to get him off and the dino-lizard was all stiff and tangled around the branches in the tank.
yea - it was really wierd.

went to see la roux last night - spur of the moment (people couldn't go and gave their tickets to lordkilljoy). it was fun - up on the balcony of the academy. it was strange going to a non-rock gig, though. no rock-out bits and the crowd was very well behaved.

nymph-newtonious has been hanging out in the filter again. i don't know is it the flow of water or the tiny bit of extra heat, or just that it's hidy, but he really seems to love it in there. i think, one of these days, i'll stop taking him out of there. but then i'm afraid that he'll find a way out of the tank altogether. hmmm.

right. enough with the procrastination.

nano records and other news from the front

i wrote 3,764 words in four hours today. That is totally a record for me. I think 4,000 is my record and that took about 10 hours or something. I think i'm getting faster :) having motivation to get done really helps. lordkilljoy is going to be home any minute and i wanted to be able to spend the evening with him. but i wanted to do that without worrying about how i didn't make my word count for the day. we're planning on going to the cinema. i'm happy, if tired. writing that much really takes it out of you. and i got 13 hours sleep last night; i needed every minute of it. i think the dark circles under my eyes are just about gone... well severely reduced anyway. but i'm at 10,000 and something small words and not even out of chapter one. i seriously have length problems. from the looks of things this novel is going to be even longer than the fall. and it's going to be even tougher to edit, because i have four paragraphs as an outline so my writing is very unstructured, i'm just adding in things as i feel like it.

yea.

i'm a little worried though. the last time i did 4,000 words was near the end of nano and i totally burned myself out. not going to happen this time. i just did it to catch up. the MGMT gig on monday threw everything out because i got no writing done. and i did nothing at all yesterday because i was totally exhausted all day. i went to bed at 9:30 last night, after almost falling asleep half on the floor and half on the couch in the sitting room. hmmm. i think i will try to go to bed early tonight too.

yea... MGMT kind of fell under the nano sweep of november. it was a really good gig. the crowd was lively (putting it nicely - they went totally insane to all the popular songs and i just had to let the crush keep me up because my balance wasn't up to keeping me steady in the rush). but it was excellent fun.

not much else new: work is the same. we put all our christmas stuff up over the week. i've come to the realization that between working in dod the last few chrsitmases and spending it in wellington in high summer (it was a manky rainy, drizzly day), christmas just dosn't mean that much to me any more. it's just another day.

k - lordkilljoy's home now. time to go.

27 October 2008

gaelcon weekend

heh, i quite like the new livejournal look for halloween - so zombie-tasatic.

just home from gaelcon (i have a feeling that this post is going to be slightly strained - my brain isn't really functioning. uh oh lordkilljoy dosen't have firefox inline dictionary installed, so prepare for careless spelling.)

ok - gaelcon. i'd not been since 2003. wow, that's 5 years. it hasn't really changed much, though - same venue, same layout, but none of that really mattered. the best part of the con was being able to stay in the hotel bar until 3 / 4 in the morning, talking and laughing and messing and then just skipping up 2 flights of stairs to bed. :) it was great.
got to play various card / board games, the most fun being the order of the stick today and no thanks yesterday. i also played hellboy rpg. while it was fun, it just didn't really feel like hellboy at all. we were human and there were no demons in the game. but well.

it's a total downer knowing that tomorrow morning all the inspiration and happy-fun energy will just be forgotten as the alarm goes off and i get up to go to work. there is nothing more depressing in life. i totally have to find a job that i really love; one that reflects everything that's good about life and that makes life worthwhile.
:sigh: my current jon is really not that bad. but really - i want a job that is like my years in college. where people are having a laugh and playing, but still being hightly creative and coming up with really good ideas. hmmm. the last time i was at gaelcon i was in 1st year of multimedia and right now i can totally see c120 so clearly in my head and us all being our usual crazy selves. ah well.

jonathan coulton on friday was good too. it was great being at a gig again. it's been ages.

nanowrimo starts on saturday. is this the first mention of it i'e made on my journal this year? how very shocking... (ahhh, lordkilljoy's v key is sticky and annoying.)

yea, i'm just going to go now. i think i'll go to bed in an hour or so. just sitting here, i feel so tired.

oh yea - i bought dice at the con. they look cool.

22 October 2008

dreams

my dreams have gotten totally crazy again. i thought it was just a spring thing, but no.
the night before last i dreamed of me and lordkilljoy trying to buy groceries, but everyone kept butting in on front of us, and then the girl ran off and our shopping was left sitting on the belt for hours.
then last night involved a group of rebels or some sort of resistance movement going up against a pirate / skeleton king and there was this wierd bit where there were demons or something and i had to free someone (possibly my aunt joan) from this dark room; but i was terrified to go in because she was possessed by the room. but i did get her out and the room looked like an old parlour from the 50s or something.

next week i will not see the sun rise, for it will all ready be up by the time i see it.

i can't wait for the weekend. lordkilljoy and i will be staying in clontarf castle. woo!! a whole 3 days of not having to stand up except to move from one place to another.

work's going well enough. i'm not really having a great week this week, simply because my hormones are acting up and making me feel rotten half the time. but i can't blame work, because i know that it wouldn't matter what i would do - i'd feel the same way.

to wrap up other things: been watching dr. who and lordkilljoy play lost odyssey and i've been playing prof. layton. we've been cooking lots and making some yummy pasta sauce mixes, with sort of random ingredients thrown in. jonathan coulton on friday - i hope my feet arn't killing me.

k - i'm going to go now.

08 June 2008

radiohead and other highlights

right at the moment i'm listening to the ting tings - great dj and bopping around in my chair like a mad thing. i really like this song, even though i was only introduced to it over the week - it was one of those instantly liked songs.

the last words that entered my head before i started posting this were: let the education commence. the education in question: lordkilljoy's favourite comics, music, games, shows, movies and other random things. all will be assimilated: professor layton (on ds, so much fun), portal (on xbox360, quite fun if somewhat frustrating), planeraty (comic, cool ideas and characters), wwe (the rock), 2 many djs (do crazy things with samples), the ting tings (the girls and the boys and the strings and the drums), sushi (norimaki at yamamori)... yea, lots.

and while radiohead should have been the highlight of the week; really, just spending time with lordkilljoy was. radiohead were really good, though. i think paranoid android was the best song they played. they also played faust arp and videotapes (my two current favourite songs from in rainbows) and loads of others... but they were the best.
as we waited for radiohead to get their stage set up it started raining and a double rainbow stretched across the sky to the left of the stage. it was pretty cool.

i got home last night to a starving kitten (i gave her a whole bowl of food and she was still meiowing). then this morning she was still starving, but we had no food left so i had to go to the shop. but that was the lead-up forget about the kitten now, this story isn't about her. on the way up to the shop this little dog passed me. he seemed a bit wary, but i shrugged it off and thought nothing more of it. then on the way back down from the shop a woman stopped me and asked if i'd seen a little dog. i felt like saying: yea, it went west towards the town centre. but i didn't. it did really make me think of prof layton looking for dahlia's cat, though. i'm so impressionable.

so i think that's about it... i'm off to taleweavers and dave's game later. that all seems so normal - it's like: back to reality now. but not in a bad way, it's just how i feel.

24 May 2008

ooh, so much news

gosh, i just don't even know where to start. the week since thursday has been so good and action-packed. lordkilljoy and i went to see indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull on thursday, to kinsale and garretstown on friday, followed by mulkabu's party (his birthday is next week) and we went to the park today. wonderful stuff.

i quite enjoyed indy, while different to the last 3, it had all the elements of a good movie, fun capers, good action, a slew of entertaining characters. and while there were one or two bits that annoyed me for their utter stupidity (can anyone say tarzan??) and the ending was a bit of a surprise (not in the way it unfolded, but in what appeared on screen), i enjoyed it tremendously.
we went for mexican (yummy) and watched grosse pointe blank. i hadn't seen it in ages. that is one of my favourite films, and i don't own it. shocking! and what was great was the fact that i remembered it as being the coolest movie, and sometimes your memory can warp things into being better than they really are, but it lived up to my expectations.

friday, we went to the beach for a walk. always a brilliant thing to do. we went all the way out to the blowhole in garretstown. i think lordkilljoy was pretty tired by the time we got back to the car (sorry!!). friday night was a laugh too. the guys are so amusing to just sit back and watch. it was good to talk to jaarius again too. we ended up in the everyman (funk disco, yea :/) at that stage i ran to the bar in desperation and had a swift drink and all of a sudden everything was so much better. the music didn't sound quite as frightening! some dancing ensued, then long island ice teas (which were way too bitter) and then we ran away from a strange woman who invaded our personal space and wouldn't go away.

then this morning, lordkilljoy asked if i'd like to go see radiohead in dublin in 2 weeks. do you even need to ask the question? i kinda had a girly spas-out-excitement moment. radiohead. live. wooooooo! i had kind of random moments of excitement today, expressed by saying "radiohead" and smiling. it should be really good. radiohead :)

i listened to in rainbows for the first time today and all but 2 songs have gone to 3 stars (in itunes) already and nude has gone to 4 stars. i love radiohead.

yeay.

01 May 2008

i went to a gig last night and it was brilliant

happy may - better yet, happy summer :)

charlie don't surf and ten past seven played in the quad last night and it was the best gig i've been to in ages. both bands were in a fabulous mood - just having fun and rocking out - they didn't seem worried about anything. the energy they put into their music was palpable - it filled the pub like a haze of excitement, like the potential of a lightening storm, and built until the last note was played.
unfortunately it will be the last gig they play for a while. colm (of charlie don't surf) is moving to italy in june and they probably won't be playing between now and then. i don't know what the deal with ten past seven is, but they said this was it for a while.

it's great being home - getting to see people i know again, going out to gigs and having a good time and stuff. but one of the best things is being at 52degrees north. the evenings are so long in this counrty. it was something i really missed travelling (christchurch is only at 43degrees). it's amazing to be able to look out my window at 9pm and still have so much light playing across the sky. yea - this country has a lot going for it.
