All my posts recently are about River

River is asleep with her eyes partly open. It is the freakiest thing I have ever seen - it's like she's possessed or something. I'm glad it's bright daylight at the moment. If it was night I think I'd have to wake her to get her to stop it.

Camping last weekend was a success. We had a really good time, enjoyed sun and rain and thunder and lightning. We got to see the milky way and a million stars - which was amazing. We did an experiment letting River run around without her lead - it was a success :) She was so tired that evening from all her running around she got really grumpy and was huffing and growling at every little noise. Poor thing. She also has ideas that she's a lap dog, when she's just too big for that.

I don't really have much news at the moment.

Doggie Toys

Just a quick note, because it is cute.

We bought River a new toy yesterday - a squeaky one, and within a few minutes she was biting it and wandering around with it in her mouth. We'd throw it and she'd run after it. We got her to jump up in the air to get it. It was great fun :)

ugly bugs

Taking River out for a walk at night is a scary, freaky experience. The bugs come out at night, so before we had River I'd convinced myself that there were very few bugs in New Mexico. Hmmm... I was just looking at the wrong time of day. There are beetles, crickets, scorpions. I saw the most ugly cricket ever the other night - called a Jerusalem Cricket - go look it up on google image search or something. It is icky and huge. I saw something pale and scurry-ful last night. It ran past us along the kerb. It was in the shade, so I didn't get a good look at it, but it looked suspiciously scorpion-like. Ugh even thinking about it freaks me out - I just uncrossed my ankles, because my skin rubbing against itself made me think there was something on me.

Maybe I'll stick to the safety of our bug-sprayed apartment complex on walks in the night time from now on.

Ah, the Joys of Owning a Doggie

Dogs will scratch because of anxiety, so when we've seen River scratching over the last few days, we've just assumed she was a little anxious over everything she's been through. We know for a fact that she suffers dog separation anxiety. The cure for that is to leave her on her own in the house for increasing amounts of time each day (we are up to 20 seconds now). Anyway. Scratching.

Today lordkilljoy saw a little black thing crawling across her face and burrowing into her fur. Immediately he went down to the pet shop to get some flea and tick killer. It's kinda cool - an oil that you put against her fur in a few spots and it gets to work killing fleas straight away. It's also meant to keep mosquitoes away. So that'll be good when we go camping.

But now I have the paranoids. Every itch I feel makes me think there are fleas on me... and suddenly I have a lot more itches than I did before we saw one on her.

Hyper Hydro Doggie

There's a bit of water in the wash at the moment and lordkilljoy had the inspired idea to bring River down there. We put her on the stretchy leash (16') that we got for her and strolled down. She was the tinyest bit cautious at first, but I took my flip flops off and stomped in the water and soon she was stomping and running all over the stream. We ran up and down and up and down until my feet got sore from the stones. I tried to run more, but even the small stones were sore to my now-sensitive soles.

And she got hyper. She ran loops around us again and again. We had to pull in her leash and stand still until she calmed a little. Then we got home and she pelted around the apartment - mad hyper. I took her into the bath to wash off the sand, but once she got out it was dash about the place again. Eventually she settled down, and now she's sitting, somewhat calm again.

It was so good to see her really enjoying herself, though :)

Sad Dog?

River seems to be going through some sort of "where is my home" sadness at the moment. She sleeps most of the day (now this could be partly due to the heat) and is only mildly interested in rubs and treats. She'll do training for a minute or two and then get bored and wander off and lie down on the ground again. She'll play with toys for a few minutes and then same thing - wander away and lie down.

Today we got her a puzzle ball that has treats hidden it. She has to push it around to get the treats to fall out the hole so she can eat them. She enjoyed playing with it a lot. Once she got used to it, her tail was up and wagging and she pushed the ball all over the place getting at the treats. She did that for about 10 minutes, then just left it and went back to sleeping.

I tried playing a game with her and she played along, rather half-heartedly for a few minutes, then lay down again. It's a bit disheartening to see her this way. I'd bring her out for a walk, but it's way too hot - 34 degrees. She does seem to enjoy walking, but sometimes she'll stop for no reason at all, or hang back until we are walking at a snails pace. I kind of put this down to the heat as well. We'll try going for a walk tonight, after dusk and see how much of a difference that makes.

She's eating, drinking and going to the loo fine, so there's nothing wrong with her. But I am looking forward to the day she perks up and realises games and toys are fun. I've read that with adopted dogs it can take a few weeks (or months, depending on how bad their last home was) for them to get used to things.

In good news, she is learning sit and come :) After that it will be stay. She barks when the UPS / Fedex person comes to the door, so the sooner I can get stay ingrained in her behaviour the better.

River Tam

This might seem to come out of the blue... but we got a dog :)

Her name is River (a good name :P ), she's small and cute and pretty good in terms of walking and things. She likes to pull on the lead a little, so we have a little bit of training to do with her. She's still young - 1 and a half. We picked her up from the animal shelter today - she'd been left there by her previous owner because they are out all day and hadn't been able to exercise / play with her enough to use up her energy, and she'd started to get a little destructive around the house.

We were given a little starter bag of food, but when we got home we realised it was cat food. So we bought dog food and gave it to River and she wouldn't eat it. We mixed it with a little of the cat food and she munched away happily. Funny doggie.

She was excellent in the car on the way home. We put the seats down, so she had full run of the back of the car, and she settled down and practically fell asleep. She was doing the head nodding thing and all. Awhhh :)
She's napping in the middle of the kitchen floor right now. She has a bed outside, a container for night-time sleeping, a good stretch of carpet, and she chooses to sleep on the hard kitchen floor. Maybe it's the coolest, or something.

It's great though. Now all of us can go out for walks in the evenings :) And she and I can go for walks in the morning and play during the day and things. Yeay.

sea monkeys

i totally forgot to mention. i got some sea monkeys (closest relative is brine shrimp) the other day. they hatched on sunday morning. they are so cute - so far i've spotted about six if them - they are small as a bit of dust, i have to look really hard to see them. their 'tank' is set up like a martian landscape, it's cool. i can't wait until they get a bit bigger and i don't have to watch intently for half a minute to see them.
they kind of puff around in spurts, they make me think of little tug boats (i have no idea why, it's not like tug boats go in spurts). right at the moment they can't swim up more than a centimeter, or maybe it's a defense thing - predators can't get them if they are that close to the ground.
anyway, when they get a bit bigger i might try to get a few pics of them.

Dinner with Denise and Eamon

We went over to Denise and Eamon for dinner last night. I made a slightly melty chocolate cake. Aoife made dinner, which was yummy. It was so good to just hang out and chat. We got to see skittles (the hamster) too. I totally want to have a hamster now.

Today, I wrote a story for Louise. I've never written a story for a 7 year old before. I don't think it was exciting enough, but I have no idea how much tension a 7 year old can handle.

I don't have much news. The apartment is mostly empty. All our stuff is gone. The tv and consoles are still here, but most of the games are gone. The shelves are empty. The walls were bare until today, when we went to ikea and got some paintings (or printed canvases, really) to replace the art prints we had put into storage. We also got a stripy rug, so the place doesn't look quite so bad any more.

I did some mad cleaning today, too. I went all around the skirting boards, hoovered under furniture, pollyfilled holes in the ceiling. So I got a bit done. Still need to clean under the appliances in the kitchen, and clean the presses, and wardrobes. God, it makes me tired just thinking about it.

Anyway. It's the weekend now. I might go to the cinema tomorrow and we are off to galway on sunday.

facebook

Yesterday, penelope_stone signed me up to facebook. She gave me a username and password and was like, 'okay, now you fill in the rest.' Yeah. I'm going to keep it to real-life friends and family, which is why I'm not posting my user name here.

But, just as when I joined twitter, I will still be posting here. In fact, this journal will be 9 in 5 days. Isn't that cool. It will be 10 years old next year. A whole decade of random posts on stuff that happens to me.

In other news: I get to cycle into Intel today. That'll be fun. I've always wanted to cycle into Intel.

I went into the kitchen today and was at the sink looking over at a blank space where Nymph used live. And when I went into the kitchen last night I was still worried about turning on the light and making noise that I'd wake him, even though he's down in Kerry now. I'll get used to it in a while. Sure, in a few weeks everything will be completely different.

Yeah. I don't think I have much else news.

I'm trying to read four books in a month (good luck to me). The first is Elantris, and I'm about a third of the way though. I may actually get it finished by the weekend, because Sanderson's writing is not complex at all. In fact, i'm finding it a little too simplistic, but that's okay. It definitely reads more like a YA (young adult) than an adult fantasy.

Right so. I'm going to go now.

Living in Kerry

I'm in penelope_stone's house and Yoshi is looking at me from the corner of the room. Yoshi and nymph live in Kerry, now. We brought them down last night and I set their tanks up today. They seem ok. Yoshi is doing his usual (ask - just hanging out. he doesn't seem stressed). Nymph seems a little more stressed, but he should be ok once his filter clears up the water.

I made chicken jalfrezi for everyone last night. it was yummy. but even better - i made chocolate cake. i have photos at home and will post them when i get back. i kept the recipe so i can make it again and this time (as if the cake wasn't rich and decadent enough, i'm going to add chocolate chips to the base mix. mmmm. yum.
we brought the remains of the cake with us (there's half of it left), and it was all i could smell as i was doing stuff in the kitchen today. i just wanted to eat it. but i'll save it for dessert.

i don't think i have much other news. well, none that i can think of anyway.

10 May 2010

crickets, crickets everywhere

lots of news. going to sum up the main bits, and go into detail on the kerfuffle in the kitchen today.

right - since i last posted, i got a job. i'm doing freelance transcription, which is great. i get to write (even if i don't get to create), i don't have to worry about getting into dublin for 9 in the morning, and i can go make tea whenever i want (it's work-from-home, if you hadn't guessed). fantastic.

saturday was my cousin, audrey's, confirmation. i went over to their house with denise. their house is beautiful, and so big. the day was good, got to meet aunts and uncles, and granny again. and i get to do it all again this weekend, because it's my cousin, conor's, confirmation. i'm looking forward to it - i'll get to see even more people.

i've started draft 3 of my novel. lots more changes in this draft, but not quite as drastic as the changes between drafts 1 and 2. i'm tackling the first chapter this week. i'm giving myself a week on ch1 and then a day for the rest of the chapters. until ch 14 (or whatever - the one that used be chapter 6) then i have to devote some time to making large changes again.

so today, or more accurately this evening: it seemed like a normal evening, had dinner, watched doctor who. and then i decided to water yoshi's tank and clean out his pool. normal enough tasks. but while i was at it, i decided to clean his little waterfall / fountain thing. i lifted off the top "rock" and in the pool of water underneath was a little floating island of critters. or critter larvae. all swimming around like bacteria under a microscope. awful. anyway i dumped them down the sink and washed out the waterfall and all was well.

but the god of tricks wasn't done with me yet. thirsty after my exertion, i got a drink. as i closed the glasses press, the smoothie maker fell from the shelf above it. but it didn't just fall onto the ground (no - that would have been too easy). it fell onto the tub of crickets (yoshi's food) and crickets, cricket poo, porrige and shed skins went everywhere. well the last three fell on the ground and on the counter and stayed put. the crickets fell on the counter and on the ground and immediately scurried for the closest dark space.

they ran under the dishwasher, under the washing machine, behind the cooker, under the microwave - even into the cracks in the tile grouting. we picked up as many as we could find, but i know for a fact there are at least three still loose in the kitchen. gooo. i'll be seeing them scurry across the floor for the next month - if not more.

23 March 2010

i'm a little hungry

more procrastination today. i spent the whole morning caring for our pets. i cleaned out nymph's tank: got rid of the bit of algae that had started to grow, cleared the debris from the stones at the bottom of the tank, gave him bloodworms to eat (not so sure he likes them as much as crickets) and cleaned off all the ornaments. yea - might take a bit for most of the bacteria to come back, but i kept most of the old water.
then i fed yoshi. he's such a scardy-head. he flinches away from me when i give him some food. silly lizard-boy.

in job-hunt news: i discovered why i never get called for an interview. i have gaps where i didn't work and then whem i did get work it was always short term. i never even considered that prospective employers would see that as a bad thing - they automatically assume that those two things mean you are unreliable and a bad worker. isn't that absolutely horrific? they blame you straight away and don't consider that there may have been no jobs or that your managers were so bad you had to leave. :sigh:
it makes me remember how petty the working world can be. and how much i can't stand shallow people.

yea.

London

For most of my life that I can remember, I've wanted to go to London, because it's the closest famous city to me and you'd think it wouldn't take that much to go visit it. But there was never anyone who wanted to go with me and I wasn't going to go on my own.
So I finally got to go to London. lordkilljoy and I went over to see Gordon and Niamh for the weekend. We saw loads: Tate Modern, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace (which should be called the horse parade), Camden, the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral and random bits of the city walking to and from tube stations. I loved all of it. I'm definitely going back some day, maybe when I have more money. There were some amazing things in Camden, but I curtailed myself to two tops.
It has great hanging out with Niamh and Gordon. We had some great meals and went out on Saturday with friends of theirs: good fun even though I was wrecked.
And on the flight back I spotted the apartment - that was mad.

In other news:
Nymph ate half a cricket today. He hasn't really been eating well since Newt died, and it had been a while since he'd eaten a decent amount. So I was delighted when he gobbled down the bit of cricket that I had chopped up for him. See, my problem is that I have no idea how big or small his stomach is and how much he's meant to eat.

In a strange sort of contrast, Yoshi refused to eat anything today. That's a first in a long time. But I'm not worried about him. He ate a pinky (new born mouse) on Friday and I imagine that he just wasn't hungry.

Our internet is down at the moment... so I'm writing this on monday, but not really sure when I'll get to post it.

11 May 2009

today is exciting

yoshi ate 3 locusts yesterday. yeay, he's such a happy-eating little dragon-pou! he also ate 5 crickets along with them. oh, and he shed another bit of skin. there had been a bit on his back that hadn't come off and it's coming off now.

ok - i probably shouldn't update right now, because lordkilljoy just sent me a link to some prince of persia movie first-look stuff and i am totally excited about it. i'm going to have to make some new PoP icons. the ones i have are so old.

anyway... went to see star trek again last night. we got to go to the showing in the massive-large screen (aka screen 17) and it was fantastic. going to the princess bride tonight. i'm so excited. woo - everything is exciting. even the fact that i potted some coriander in the kitchen sink (ok - i potted it in a pot, but used the sink to catch all the soil that fell out) and and to buy a plunger because the soil blocked the sink up.

apart from that, i havn't much news. not doing any writing today, because the apartment is a big mess and needs cleaning and other such jobs - like potting the coriander (who i christened mr. coriander, after the character in the neverending story) - need doing.

nymph's eating is sporadic these days. i think i might put him down to feeding every 3 days, instead of every 2. yoshi begins to look a little starved after 2, but i think nypmh is fully grown and doesn't need as much food.

i bought a Japanese-learning thing in aldi the other day and it's really good.

and i finished ratchet and clank: quest for booty yesterday. that game was way too hard. there were some bits that took me days to pass. i hate games like that, because i love adventure games for their flow and forgiving ways. so when i get stuck because some stupid bad guy keeps knocking me off a ledge at the exact same spot (no matter what i do) it makes me really annoyed. the game was fun, just annoying.
i'm back playing psychonauts. it's a fun game. i started from the start again, so that i could get a handle on the controls, and remember the story.

motiviation

happy birthday nesf

last night i watched gladiator. i think it has to be one of my favourite movies ever. i've seen it about 10 times and it's brilliant every time. it was so good, in fact, that it broke my creative block. i went upstairs afterwards and wrote about a page (which isn't that much, but i was tired). then today, i got about 700 words done (which isn't that much either), but more importantly i remembered how to write. this may seem like a kind of stupid thing to have to remember (but you must keep in mind that this is coming from someone who forgot about party shuffle in iTunes). my problem is that i've been trying to write straight to the screen, which never works with me. last night, i remembered that i write lying down in bed - and it works. words just flow and ideas come so much easier. i think sitting and creativity just don't happen for me. so now i'll be writing mornings and evenings, and hopefully getting up to 1500 (2000 would be sweet, but perhaps a little unrealistic) words per day. of course, this will only last while i'm doing re-writes, but i have about 4 scenes to do at the moment.

so all's good :)

i got to see harry and guinness playing for real today. ooh, i think i totally forgot to mention penelope_stone's video of them. here's the video. so today, we were listening to music outside (the sun is shining - it's wonderful) and lovecats came on. you may have noticed that lovecats is the song from the vid. anyway, it came on and the two messers came into the garden and wrestled for a bit. it was so funny. and crazily coincidental. my life is just full of them these days!!
harry and guinness are totally like gay loves, though. they'd totally have little puppy-kittens if they could!!
