I've never really had a favourite month. When I was younger and people would ask I'd always say August because that's the month I was born, therefore it is special. But living in Arizona I finally have a proper favourite month and it is February (it'll go back to being August once we move back to Ireland). I remember loving February here last year and I've kind of been spending the whole year waiting to see if my memory was correct. And it was. I just went for a walk with River and it is the most perfect day out there. And that's what February in Arizona. 28 (or 29) days of pure perfection.
I also want to jot down (for posterity) that I fixed my mouse today. Ever since I got it (over a year ago) the scroll wheel has been a bit sticky. It just never scrolled smoothly. So yesterday I finally got annoyed enough at it (can't even remember what pushed me over the edge) to go buy some small screwdrivers and open it up. It took me about half an hour just to work up the courage to yank off the outer casing. I didn't want it to break. Anyway I got it down to circuit boards and pried off the wheel eventually. And sure enough, the grippy part of the wheel was loose and floppy and altogether bad.
I cleaned it up a bit (lots of gunk floating around it) and put it all back together. But it was even worse after being poked and prodded. So today I opened it up again (it took about 1 minute this time), cut off the offending grippy circle and stuck a new piece of grippy rubber on with superglue. And oh my god, it's like super-duper-extra-responsive scroll wheel. It's like having been crawling and now I'm flying. Everything goes up and down so fast.
I kinda love that I fix things. I don't think that happens much any more. People tend to take the easy route and throw the thing out and buy a new one. But I love fixing things, and even more when I make them better than they had been.
My life as it unfolds week by week (or month by month depending on how interesting things are).

My Writing Area
My computer desk faces a wall, a depressing, grey wall. Today I fixed that by putting these photos up, and brightening up the whole space a bit.
The sculptures are by Rik Allen. They are pretty cool, and interesting to have in front of me whenever I look away from my computer.
I don't have much other news.

hat
do you remember last week, when i said i lost my hat? well, i couldn't live without it and i've ordered a new one from the company who make them :) i'm happy. i hope it gets here, though. the address had UK instead of US on it. i emailed them about it, but they didn't reply. i'm sure someone in the postal system will be good enough to change the k into an s...
i don't have much other news. i moved all the furniture in the apartment around today. i didn't like the way it was before, it wasn't cosy at all. and there wasn't room for my computer desk. i still amn't sure about the location i found for the desk, but the sitting room is vastly improved from the way it was. we'll see how lordkilljoy reacts when he gets home. i'm sure he'll like it.
it's wonderful to have my keyboard again. i love this keyboard. typing on it is so easy. i have my mouse too. mice are so much more efficient than a trackpad. i also shipped a temperature sensor / clock thing. so now i have a clock that tells me what time it is in ireland without having to do any addition. lazy, i know, but there you go.
right, i think that's mainly it.

Winter
I declare it officially winter. The first frost appeared this morning. The house was at 12C (even after the heating had been on for 40 minutes) so I put the heating on for another 2 hours. It's 19.5 in here now and the sun is doing an excellent job of warming this room. It's such a pity this is the only room with a south-facing window. But at least we have that much. We could have no south-facing windows.
I brought a hot-water bottle to bed last night and had it at my feet the whole night. It was lovely.
We went over to Sheila's for dinner last night. It was good to see them all. Dinner was good, desert was good. They are all well. Laura is a mad little thing.
I can't think of anything else to say. I think I said everything yesterday (or whenever).
I replaced the ram battery in my PC. It wouldn't boot properly yesterday, so I didn't have a choice. that was ok.
right, bye.

Loads of news
I need a new CMOS RAM battery for my computer. I knew this day would come, I expected it to come years ago. Problem is, I'm leaving in a month (not bringing my PC with me) and I won't be using my computer for 2+ years. I'm not really sure if it's worth getting a new battery.
mulkabu was up for the weekend. We had fun, went to see Fozzy (wrestler, Chris Jerico's band) on friday night. I haven't had as much fun in a long time. Chris Jerico really knows how to get a crowd going. Everyone loved him. Our group even managed to get a shoutout from him. :)
I'm tired now, though. It doesn't seem to matter what time I go to bed, my body wants to be up and about at 9am. So I've been getting about 6 hours sleep for the last few days. The kitchen was a bit of a mess too, and I managed to tidy it, but I only got half the dishes washed. This seems to be a new strategy for me. Washing half the dishes isn't nearly as daunting as washing all of them. So I washed the plates and knives and forks and left the pots, pans and bowls for later. Or tomorrow.
The building energy rating guy comes tomorrow. I wonder should I turn on the heating for him? Would it make the place seem better insulated if it was warm? I don't bother with the heating when I'm here on my own, because my little room gets nice and warm anyway.
I ate one of our peppers today. It was nice, as peppers go. They are not my favourite ever fruit. I have four cherry tomatoes beside me, which I just picked. I want to eat them right now, but I don't feel like them. (Yes, it is an odd sort of way to be.) I made hummus on friday. There was too much lemon juice in it. I've eaten about a third, but I'm not sure if I'll eat any more; it's really sour.
Wow, I just looked up what the difference between sour and bitter was (because I wasn't sure which my hummus was) and sour is acid while bitter is base. Isn't that interesting?
I also made chocolate cake again. It is totally yummy.
I'm addicted to a new (old) RPG. It's old, but I've never played it before, so it's new to me. Arcanum (of Steamworks and Magick Obscura). I'm enjoying it. I like the setting and the character system. The main plot is a little slow and there aren't enough side quests (or they are really hard to find), but apart from that, it's fun. I'm playing just to level and make my character better. I want to be master of firearms, lockpick and prowling. I also want to have a bit of magic and be able to make some stuff. I also want a new gun, but they are expensive. So, maybe by the time I get to 40th level, I will have all these things. I'm at 13th now. And my team and I managed to take down a 30th level jellyfish looking thing. We lured it away from its friends and ambushed it in the forest. It was expertly executed (the plan, not the jelly. I think it (the jelly) died from lead poisoning after I shot it with about 20 bullets).
Right. I'm going to go now.

a slow day
kind of a slow day today - i think i only wrote about 300 words. but it's better than nothing. i've been suffering apathy all day - i just can't make any decisions. i even went for a walk (on the advisement of lordkilljoy) and i couldn't decide where i wanted to go. haaaaaaa (that's a sigh). i ended up walking to the meath border (6km round trip - i made it to within a quarter km of the border, wasn't sure how far it was).
then i had lunch, settled down to write, got a little done, got annoyed at the vagaries of my internet connection (it's still misbehaving) and decided to clean up my background processes. so i cut out about 5 processes that i wasn't using and timed my bootup. it takes 30 seconds to the login screen and another 30 to load up programs. and this is a 7 and a half year old computer. i think i'm doing well. (my god, my computer is old.) 7 and a half years of love - it's no wonder lordkilljoy can't get me to buy a new one. it would be like putting down a beloved pet who is in the nick of health (is that even a proper phrase?).
anyway.
i'm playing metroid prime at the moment (on the wii - it's the first time i've invested a significant amount of hours on a game for this console). it's good, but annoying in places. i think if i was playing with hints off i'd have given up in utter frustration by now. modern games have made me soft - i want everything to be easy and laid out for me. but saying all that - i am enjoying it.
right. i don't really have anything else to say.

more net connection troubles
so, my internet has been on and off all day. i know it's not the drivers or any programs clashing because i sorted all that back in november (or whenever it was). that's leaves one thing in my mind and that's the flow of data over the air itself. the dongle thingy that gives my computer wireless access is down the back of my computer, 3 or 4 walls, me and the hunk of metal that is the computer away from the router. the connection was coming up as very good, rather than the usual excellent. so i got a little usb extender thingy and now the dongle is on top of my computer and the signal strenght is excellent :)
hopefully it won't crash out any more.

the news of the last week and a half
right, i have heaps of news, starting with the cutest.
we bought a bird feeder thing in tesco about a month ago - a coconut shell filled with seeds and a kind of lard mixture. we had it out the front and in 3 weeks no bird touched it. last week i moved it to the back and i just checked it there and it's completely eaten. that's kinda cool. clearly the back of the apartment is superior to the front and that's where i live now :)
which moves me nicely on to my next bit of news - my computer is now in the spare room :) i have my old computer desk, liam's chair and a rad beside me. the only things i miss are the arms from my old chair. but i'm sure i'll get used to things. i even had to close down the blind a little because the sun was shining in my eyes. wooo.
now on to the not so cute and happy news. the reason i stayed down in cork for almost a week and a half (when it was only meant to be a weekend) is because joan (my aunt) died on saturday night (early sunday morning). it came as a bit of a shock but everyone knew the day would come at some stage. and now no one needs to worry any more because she's better of where she is, i imagine.
so we had the funeral and the cremation on thursday and then i decided to stay the weekend and got the train back today. in one way it was good, because i got to see aunts i'd not seen in years.
yea, so. i'm going to go now - i need to bring the rest of my stuff out of the kitchen. it's all the finickity (sic) stuff that i have so much of and that i have to try to re-home on this desk somewhere.
right - bye.

i can't think of a subject
this morning i turned on my computer and the second icon to greet me in the notification area was a functional internet connection. and my response was: sweetness insanity! i haven't used that phrase in a long time - i kinda wondered where it came from, what murky depths of my brain did it leap out from when it saw the chance to be at large in the world again.
but anyway, i was very happy to see it. i think it even featured in my dream last night. my dream was really wierd, though. in it, i was told that i had a second dad and he was a trucker who drove to china on a regular basis, which is why he was never around. and he was trying to parallel park an articulated truck (a really big one) with very little success. by dream also featured ambrosia creamed rice, the regular members of my family, a tiny kitchen, and probably loads else that i can't remember.
apart from that, i have nothing else to say, really. i smell like lush yummy shower cream.
it's a bit stormy today - i had to turn on the light getting up (at 8:30) and while i was in the shower, listening to the rain and wind on the window, i had a sudden desire to put up our little fiber-optic tree and blue lights. roll on december :)

internet woes will be a thing of the past
more internet troubles. today my connection slunk out of the computer, crept from the kitchen and quietly flung itself from the balcony. and i was very, very annoyed at it. so between uninstalls, reinstalls, searching for drivers, reboots, more searching, i finally found a driver that is working. and hopefully it will continue to work with no hiccups long into the future.
so that's what i did today, instead of writing. hmmm. i've been on chapter 6 for the last week and a half now. (yes - i am supposed to be half way into ch. 7, but if i don't get ch.6 straight, the rest of it will be crooked too.) i'm getting through it all right, just very slowly. i'm writing all new descriptions for the main human city (i call them humans, even though all the races are human, because these guys don't use magic). it's the same city that zan and kej live in, only 20 years earlier. so it's funny knowing the area, but describing it from zachery's point of view. it's really cool actually - as i write, i'm seeing the place in my head and it seems so familiar - like a city i've lived in myself. it's kinda mad. i guess it sort of helps that i modelled it a little bit on cork city. only slightly, though - the hills more than anything. certainly not the buildings.
i don't really have a lot of news - we watched star trek on blu-ray last night. it is such a good movie. i smiled through most of it - the characters are just so funny.
i reached level 20 in fallout3. it's wierd now to find places and kill things and not get any xp for it. i'm finishing off the side quests and then i'm going to go finish the main quest and hopefully by then the dlc will have arrived (goty edition ordered - thanks to lordkilljoy)
yea - i'm going to go now.

sp3
"It's nice to know that there will still be kittens in the singularity." such a cute quote.
i installed xp sp3 today - i don't really know why i waited so long. when sp2 came out i ordered it (on cd, because my 'net connection wasn't good enough to download it - shock) straight away. but sp3 has been out for ages and i just never bothered with it.
but for these few days i have to keep my 'net connection open and having it crash out every 20 minutes is just not on. so, in a bid to eradicate my connection woes, i updated to sp3. and so far it seems to be working out well.
i've listened to Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption) by Muse 21 times over the last week. i think there's subliminal messaging in the lyrics: let's start over again.
wacom are running a competition on dA with the theme: dreams. i'm very tempted to enter, because i have these amazing ideas in my head, but i just know that if i try to draw them they will fall apart. i can never draw what's in my head. something in my brain messes up the composition, or perhaps images in my head are in 5D or something and don't convert well to 2D.
in other news: i'm back playing fallout3, and listening to a lot of philip glass at the moment.
that is all.

Wacom bamboo
this entry is being written from lordkilljoy's new toy, a Wacom bamboo graphics tablet (A5). Cool, but it does have its problems. As in, i would be faster writing this by typing, but it's fun to hand write onto your computer and see the text come up like normal on the text box. Yea, allow me to demonstrate by not correcting the following sentence:
thissentence ispure, uneditd output fromMac OS X `S B handwritingrecognitionpmgmm,Jnkw$. Yea, maybe i need to adjust the sliders for my handwriting width. OK, i've done that. Let's See how it turns out now. dedicated readers of my Lj may have noticed that i do capitalize my handwritten words - it is purely an "i couldn't be bothered with hitting shift" problem with typing.
Yea. this entry has taken way too long to write.
It has taken me 20 minutes to get this far. the other crazy thing is that Inkwell makes a little writing sound for you - as if the real sound of stylus on tablet wasn't enough. OK, i made some adjustments + things seem to be going a lot smoother. What i do like is the little symbols that mean spacebar (for editing) and return. Ugh, this refuses to recognise my capital i as what it is. it keeps wanting to put J or T. Annoying.
Right. i've had enough. Good night.
P.S. i'm playing Devil may Cry 4 at the moment and it is so much fun. totally over the top ridiculous, but in a good way.

silly connection
Ever since we got our new internet in july, my connection has been on and off (unable to find certificates, limited connectivity, crashing out, unable to connect to wireless card, all sorts of fun things) and every so often i go at it to see if i can make it work properly. invariably i just make things worse and end up having to do a system restore to get it working at all. so today - since i'm a week ahead in my 16 week plan, i decided to go at it again. now it seems that the router will only pick up my pc if another pc is already connected to it. it won't start up wireless broadcasting just for my pc, no matter how hard i plead with it.
so i have it working now (but the laptop is also connected) and i'm just hoping that when i turn on my computer on monday i'll see a fresh, bright-eyed and ready connection waiting for me. i'm not keeping my hopes up on that, though.
i'm back playing fable2 at the moment. did i mention that already? i started a new character and am really enjoying the game. i've gotten up to new stuff in the game and it's really exciting. in fact, i enjoyed my time in the spire so much that i'm going to take my old character (the evil one) there and see just how bad things get. my good char woosed out at having to kill a fellow guard.
i'm back to 4 layers today (and fingerless-gloves). i had on 3 yesterday. i think it's the humidity is getting to me. i put on my hello kitty jumper this morning and was delighted by the smell of nag champa from the health fair, which is the last time i wore this jumper. i can still smell it now, but not as much - every time i moved during the day i'd get this lovely whiff. i'm totally considering putting an unopened box at the bottom of the wardrobe. mmmmm :)
wardrobe and cupboard are the wierdest words ever. and what's wierder is that they are both places to keep stuff. odd.
right, so. i'll go now.

wardrobe and cupboard are the wierdest words ever. and what's wierder is that they are both places to keep stuff. odd.
right, so. i'll go now.

yeay, i can play games on my pc again
i am the happy owner of a new cd/dvd drive. i stole it off the pc that lordkilljoy was building but gave up on. and it works perfectly. i got to play oblivion (shivering isles) on my computer last night. and i'll be able to make penelope_stone a mix cd now. yeay.
and i have an old cd drive to open and play with. after pulling some funky-powerful magnets out of lordkilljoy's old hard drive, i'm curious to see what a cd drive will have.
i'm working on the cappanalea website at the moment and noticed a wierd sort of typo: Inspaniduals. it's because i was changing some divs to spans and it took the middle out of this word. i'm kind of laughing at it. it's a really funny sounding word if you say it out loud.
anyway - web dev until 12, then writing after lunch. woo!

self-pitying lj rant worked
sorry to have inflicted my last post on everyone, but i needed it. i'm a firm believer in the livejournal as therapy theory. it works every single time. the one great thing about me is that i can only fall so far down the depression hole before i hit the big puffy bouncy cushion that lives at the bottom. once i get there i spring back up pretty quickly. woo!
so i still have no direction with my live, but who cares about the big things? i went off and planned a cycle-trip for myself out to donadea forest (about the same distance out to farran from home (just over 12km if you go the straightest way)), i cleaned yoshi's tank and fixed the pump on his waterfall (there was a dead worm blocking the inlet... eep). i think he thinks i'm a big scary cleaning monster now, though. he's watching me intently, probably trying to figure out what i'm going to do to his tank next. or maybe he's hoping i'll give him some food. i do think that there are no more crickets hiding in the tank, though. i think they all drowned in the waterfall (there were 3 dead crickets and two dead worms in there, wonderful).
i think i'm having a slight love affair with lordkilljoy's macbook. it's just so pretty to work on. it's been broken since november or something, and he fixed it last week. and of all the 6 computers in the apartment, this is the one i chose for updating my journal. well - i would have chosen my pc, but i turned it off when i went cleaning yoshi's tank.
right so. that's all i have to say.

things of today
i figured out the problem with my keyboard. there was too much metal between the transmitter and the receiver. so i moved all my stuff from a metal box to a cloth one. it seems to have helped.
i went into the social welfare office today and picked up forms that need to be filled in. they need to be handed in on the first day of my unemployment.
mad - i just got distracted from writing this entry by the design for the cappanalea site. that's a first. i'm somewhat chuffed by this achievement!
i really don't have much to say. my other big news of the day is that the bank does not want to give me a credit card. again. that's twice now that they have rejected my application. my last attempt was two years ago, it seems they still have something against me. damn, and i really want to be able to buy stuff online.
right. off i go again.

So i handed in my notice yesterday. I've never actually handed in a notice before. Mostly contracts have ended, or employers have known the day i'll be leaving for ages. But anyway. It's over now. My last day is the 22nd. Yeay.
We went to see the wrestler the other night. Darren Aronofsky makes movies that affect me so badly. Like requiem for a dream: that movie left me scarred for weeks. The fountain had me in tears from about half way though, and the wrestler made me faint. There's one bit in it were there's some kind of crazy blood-frenzy wrestling going on and they are stapling each other and sticking in thumb tacks and wrapping each other in barb wire and stuff. It was utterly gross. Even worse was when all the tacks and staples had to be pulled out again. Gross. I think the fact that i'd eaten a lot of really salty pop-corn on an empty stomach didn't help either. lordkilljoy will probably say i'm just making excuses, but it's happened to me before that i've fainted eating pop-corn. But the gory scenes were definitely a catalyst. It took me about 10 minutes to recover. My ears were buzzing and i couldn't hear anything. I missed the whole next scene because of it.
My keyboard is being a little annoying. It's starting to miss some keys. Hmmm. This just won't do at all. It's not like lordkilljoy doesn't have about 5 keyboards lying around, but i really like this one.
In lizard-y news... Yoda has stopped eating and has taken to hiding in the corner. His skin has turned very brown. I'm a little concerned. Yoshi is doing well, though. He seems to have settled in. He ate 2 mealworms this morning. yeay. I should post pics.
I was talking to penelope_stone today. Her fish laid eggs recently. That's so crazy!
You can tell i've been doing proper work recently, because there are a few capital letters scattered in among my sentences.

the morning news
i shall attempt to get all my news in in ten minutes. excuse any bad typos.
work has been going well. i had my training on tuesday and had to travel 3 hours by public transport yo get there, even though it would have taken 40 minutes by car. oh well. i think getting a car and getting my licence is moving up in my list of things to do.
the training was good - i learned how to approach customers in an open manner and it really works - even where you stand in the shop makes a difference. people are coming up to me asking for stuff, and buying stuff. it's cool. i still haven't managed to sell a laptop, but i've helped people make up their minds on what sort of thing they want.
i'm on my computer right now :) nothing like working on your own computer that you know every quirk and nuance of. and i get to listen to my itunes again. woo!
emmm... i don't actually think i have much else to say. i got to play my ds for the 6 hours of travelling i did on tuesday. i'm really liking drawn to life. i love drawing the things it tells you - because it's easy - you just follow thier giude and then go mental with shading, highlighting and adding in details. of course, all this is in little pixels, so you're not coming out with masterworks - but it's still fun.
i can't play the world ends with you anymore, because i can't get past the battle on day 2.
right - i have to go now, get ready for work.

short ramble
it's raining out. a nice kind of heavy rain, that sounds pretty splashing against the ground and smells like earth and greenery and the vibrant life of plants in summer. it's the kind of rain for running out in wearing your pyjamas and getting drenched and cold but before that happens, you get a nice tickle from nature.
yesterday, my keyboard was moaning at me about its batteries being critical, but today all seems well again. i have some batteries in front of me anyway, just in case.
i don't really have any news worthy of note, so i guess i'll just go now.
woah, the rain just got really heavy. cool.

party shuffle
today (20 days after i arrived home) i was reminded about the coolness of party shuffle, thanks to penelope_stone. i had completely forgotten about it, and i even have a playlist in itunes called "the empty playlist" and i remembered that i used to use it for something, but i couldn't remember what. but now i remember that i'd set party shuffle on the empty playlist and use it as a play area for making temporary playlists. ahhh, the joys of itunes. now i remember why i havn't switched to any other player.
oh, the forgetfulness of humans!
i went messing with my camera this morning and this was the result.
i tied up my hair in 2 pony tails today as well. it looks really cute - i took a pic of that too.
yea - kind of random morning.
